    DESIGN AND SIMULATION OF A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

     

    An enhanced version of BNRM1 (biological nutrients removal model nº1) has been incorporated into the WWTP simulator software known as DESASS (design and simulation of activated sludge) to make it easier to use. This model was validated by pilot plant tests and industrial WWTP data.

    DESASS can design new treatment plants and also redesign existing plants to enhance their performance. The areas and units covered by DESASS include: primary settlers, activated sludge systems for organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus removal, secondary settlers, thickeners, aeration systems, systems for generating volatile fatty acids by primary sludge fermentation, anaerobic and aerobic sludge digestors, dewatering tanks, aerobic and anaerobic membrane reactors and SHARON and BABE systems.

    DESASS can also be used to troubleshoot operating problems at existing WWTPs and to analyse improvement and optimisation alternatives.
